
This morning the Biden Administration declared Monkeypox a national health emergency. The new order will free up emergency funds and lift some hurdles. During the announcement, today of the Health Emergency President Joe Biden named Robert Fenton as the White House’s national monkeypox response coordinator. Fenton is currently the regional Federal Emergency Management administrator for Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada will be will coordinating the federal government’s response to the outbreak. During the meeting biden also nominated Dr. Demetre Daskalakis to serve as the duputy coordinator. Dr. Demetre Daskalakis currently works for the CDC and is the director of the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.
What is Monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a disease that is mostly spreading in the LGBTQ Community and among gay men. Studies done by The New England Journal of Medicine are showing that Monkeypox is primarily driven by sex between men, according to the first major peer-reviewed paper to analyze a large set of cases of the virus done by The New England Journal of Medicine. The CDC is also warning gay and bisexual men to limit the amount the sex partners they have. Monkeypox also spreads from skin to skin contact meaning that if you shake a hand of someone who has monkeypox you may get it. The outbrake according to epidemiologists began in mid-spring at gatherings of gay and bisexual men in Europe.
